Witch is a loaded word. Coded with negativity, but equally a liberating word. It is a word that has been linked to centuries of oppression and still conjures up fear and mistrust, to this day. It is judged as devil worship and that fear still permeates the modern world.
Contrary to the fairy-tale version, Witches are not menacing broomstick flying old hags, with warts on their noses, who cast spells all day long, hell bent on destruction!
Long ago, Witches were the village healers, sought after for their wisdom and intuitive natural healing abilities. They were the medicine women, the midwives, the visionaries, the story keepers and guardians of the feminine mysteries
These women looked to the natural world for answers to help heal their communities. But as the world turned toward more patriarchal rule, the word Witch became synonymous with wickedness and malevolence. Witches were demonized because of their power and sovereignty, and the fear of Witches within society became the normal function of life.
Witch trials all over the world have had an impact on human rights, including how women have been and are still treated today.
Here in Scotland the Witch Trials were tragic and some of the most brutal ever seen. These trials began with a royal obsession of black magic sparking the flame of Europe's most brutal witch hunts in the 1590’s.
The underlying reason for the Scottish witch trials (or any of the witch trials around the world) was fear, including a political and religious agenda.
Many of us have lost our connection with our deepest knowing, intuition, and our ability to follow our own natural cycles and integrate them into all aspects of our lives.
This magical icon holds deep feminine power and wisdom! Women can work with this archetype to reclaim their innate power and sovereignty.
